Why small trim area can carry substantial labor
Walls reward broad roller passes. Trim may require cleaning, deglossing, feather-sanding, caulk, filling, masking, careful brushwork, and inspection along every edge. A baseboard's face is narrow, but protecting the floor and maintaining a clean line continue for the entire room perimeter. Doors, windows, corners, profiles, hardware, and color changes interrupt production.
For a simple 12x14 room with the model's 5.5-inch baseboard, one counted door casing, and two counted window casings, the worked model below produces $300 to $1,050, with a modeled midpoint of $575. This deliberately broad range excludes the door slab, crown molding, major repair, hazardous-material work, taxes, travel, and contractor minimum charges.
Inventory trim before measuring it
"Paint the trim" is not a complete scope. List baseboard, shoe molding, door casing, window casing, jambs, crown, chair rail, wainscot, built-ins, and door slabs separately. Record profile, condition, color, sheen, sides, and whether hardware is removed or masked. A flat 3.25-inch baseboard is different work from ornate 8-inch baseboard with failed caulk and several layers of coating.
Usually measured by length
- Baseboard and shoe molding
- Crown and chair rail
- Straight jamb or shelf edges
Usually counted by opening or unit
- Door and window casings
- Door slabs, sidelights, and transoms
- Built-ins, columns, and complex assemblies
Contractors may price those units directly because a square-foot conversion does not fully capture corners and detail. The conversion below exists to make the site's material and labor formulas inspectable, not to prescribe how a painting company must estimate.
Convert linear feet into modeled face area
The 12x14 room perimeter is 2 x (12 + 14) = 52 linear ft.The calculator represents its 5.5-inch baseboard face with a rounded 0.46-foot factor, producing 52 x 0.46 = 23.9 sq. ft. It models 3.5-inch casing with a rounded 0.29-foot factor and allows 17 linear feet for each counted door and 14 for each counted window. One door contributes17 x 0.29 = 4.9 sq. ft.; two windows contribute2 x 14 x 0.29 = 8.1 sq. ft.
| Trim | Length x face width | One coat | Two coats |
|---|---|---|---|
| Baseboard | 52 ft. x 0.46 | 23.9 sq. ft. | 47.8 sq. ft. |
| One door casing allowance | 17 ft. x 0.29 | 4.9 sq. ft. | 9.9 sq. ft. |
| Two window casing allowances | 2 x 14 ft. x 0.29 | 8.1 sq. ft. | 16.2 sq. ft. |
| Total | Baseboard + door + windows | 37.0 sq. ft. | 73.9 sq. ft. |
This face-area method does not fully measure routed profiles, top edges, returns, end grain, deep jambs, or waste. It is adequate for a transparent planning example. Measure door slabs by actual faces and edges; do not hide them inside a narrow casing calculation.
Paint quantity is not the main cost driver
At a general manufacturer reference of 350 to 400 square feet per gallon, 73.9 coated square feet is mathematically a small fraction of a gallon. Real purchase quantity depends on whether the exact trim enamel is available in a quart, whether primer is separate, and whether enough remains for brush and container loss plus touch-ups. Paint Cost Check conservatively rounds trim as a separate product category, so it can recommend one whole gallon even when the raw need is smaller.
That approach may overstate the cheapest possible DIY purchase for one room, but it avoids pretending wall and trim coatings are interchangeable. Read the exact product's label for coverage, compatible substrates, preparation, application, recoat time, ventilation, and cleanup. A contractor using stock material or a smaller package may price materials differently.
Worked labor and professional-price model
The model applies two coats at 25 to 45 coated square feet per hour. Standard prep adds a surface-area allowance plus a per-room amount, and setup/cleanup is counted even on a small area. The example assumes smooth, accessible trim in an empty room, with ordinary cleaning, small fills, light sanding, spot primer, and caulk touch-up rather than wholesale restoration.
| Work component | Low case | Typical case | High case |
|---|---|---|---|
| Apply two coats | 73.9 / 45 = 1.6 hr. | Midpoint set after total rounding | 73.9 / 25 = 3.0 hr. |
| Standard prep | 37 / 350 + 0.5 = 0.6 hr. | Midpoint set after total rounding | 37 / 180 + 1 = 1.2 hr. |
| Setup and cleanup | 1.25 hr. | Midpoint set after total rounding | 2.0 hr. |
| Rounded total | 3.5 hr. | 5.0 hr. | 6.5 hr. |
| Modeled materials | $100 | $145 | $190 |
| Billed labor assumption | 3.5 x $45 = $157.50 | 5 x $65 = $325 | 6.5 x $90 = $585 |
| Before final $25 rounding | ($100 + $157.50) x 1.12 = $288.40 | ($145 + $325) x 1.22 = $573.40 | ($190 + $585) x 1.35 = $1,046.25 |
| Professional estimate | $300 | $575 | $1,050 |
Combining those hours with separate trim paint, primer/supplies, and the site's overhead/margin factors yields the $300 to $1,050 model range, with a $575 modeled midpoint, after rounding. A minimum service charge can dominate such a small job. Bundling trim with walls may reduce repeated setup, but it does not make trim labor disappear. The BLS painter occupation profile is wage context only and does not certify any of these billing assumptions.
Preparation must be written, not implied
Clean and inspect
Identify grease, wax, failing coating, open joints, rot, moisture, dents, and previous repair before choosing a process.
Define surface preparation
State cleaning, deglossing, sanding, filling, caulking, primer, and which defects are excluded or become change orders.
Protect adjacent finishes
Identify floor, wall, hardware, glass, and furniture protection plus who removes and reinstalls items.
Specify finish
Name the exact product line, color, sheen, coat count, application method, and standard for acceptable brush or spray appearance.
Caulk is not a universal repair for moving joints, rot, or structural gaps. Likewise, paint is not a moisture remedy. Wood replacement, stripping, lead-safe containment, major coating failure, sprayed fine finishing, and shop finishing are not included in this worked example.
Older paint and indoor work limitations
Sanding and scraping can turn a small trim project into paint-disturbance work. EPA's RRP program explains federal lead-safe requirements that may apply to renovation in pre-1978 homes and child-occupied facilities. The example excludes testing, containment, specialized cleaning, and certified renovation. State or local rules may add requirements.
Follow the exact coating's safety and ventilation instructions and protect occupants from dust and emissions. EPA indoor-air guidance provides broader remodeling practices, but it does not approve a particular product or replace its label, safety data sheet, or project-specific professional advice.

Questions about this estimate
Is trim painting priced by linear foot or square foot?
Contractors may estimate by linear foot, opening, crew-hour, or complete project. Paint Cost Check converts linear length and profile width to modeled surface area so coats and gallons can be combined with its labor assumptions.
How much paint do baseboards need?
Multiply baseboard length by visible profile width, convert inches to feet, and multiply by coats. Paint Cost Check models a 5.5-inch baseboard face plus 3.5-inch casing allowances of 17 linear feet per door and 14 per window. The mathematical quantity may be less than a gallon, but separate color or enamel, package sizes, brush and container loss, profile detail, and touch-up reserve affect what you buy.
Are doors included when a quote says trim?
Not necessarily. Baseboards, window casing, door casing, crown, chair rail, doors, jambs, and built-ins should be listed separately. Confirm whether both sides and edges of each door are included.
Can old trim be sanded before painting?
Surface preparation must follow the coating instructions and the home's conditions. Disturbing paint in pre-1978 housing can create hazardous lead dust and may trigger EPA lead-safe requirements; this model excludes testing and containment.
