The basic paint formula
For each product and color, calculatepaintable square feet × coats ÷ square feet per gallon. The result is theoretical gallons. Convert that number into available can sizes only after keeping walls, ceilings, trim, primer, and distinct colors separate.
Sherwin-Williams says a gallon of paint typically covers about 350–400 square feet and primer about 200–300 square feet. Those are useful starting points, not guarantees. The manufacturer also notes that wall texture and desired coverage affect the quantity. Technical data and the label for the exact product control when they differ from a general planning range.
Measure the room in four passes
Walls
Measure the perimeter and multiply by wall height, or measure each wall separately when the room is irregular. Subtract meaningful openings. Do not subtract a door if the door itself will receive the same product; instead, calculate it as a separate surface when the coating or method differs.
Ceilings
For a flat rectangle, multiply length by width. Vaults, trays, beams, and slopes need their actual dimensions. Keep ceiling paint separate because its formulation, color, sheen, and purchase quantity can differ from the walls.
Trim and doors
Record baseboards, casings, crown, windows, and doors by component. Linear feet alone do not convert to gallons without an assumed trim width and number of faces, so use the selected product's guidance or calculate exposed area.
Primer and finish coats
Multiply each finish area by its planned coats. Calculate primer separately for bare material, repairs, stains, incompatible coatings, or other conditions identified by product instructions. Spot primer and full-room primer are not interchangeable quantities.
Worked example: walls, ceiling, and a texture allowance
Take an 11 × 13 ft. room with 8 ft. walls, one 3 × 7 ft. door, and one 3 × 5 ft. window. Assume two wall coats, two ceiling coats, and a planning coverage of 375 sq. ft. per gallon. The 375 figure is an example within a general manufacturer range; it is not a substitute for the selected product's data.

The example shows why a small change can cross a package boundary. At the stated assumptions, smooth walls fit mathematically within two gallons, while a 10% adjustment moves the result just above two. Before buying a third gallon, verify whether that adjustment is appropriate for the actual surface, whether the exact paint is sold in quarts, and whether same-batch touch-up material is valuable.
Choose adjustments based on evidence
Reasons quantity can increase
- Porous, patched, rough, or heavily textured surfaces
- A dramatic color change or uneven existing finish
- Application loss in rollers, brushes, trays, or spraying
- Extra material reserved for punch-list work and future touch-ups
- Irregular geometry that was simplified during measurement
Reasons not to add blindly
- The product's stated spread rate may already fit the surface
- Primer and finish paint cannot be combined as one gallon category
- Different colors or sheens need separate rounding
- Unopened custom-tinted paint may have limited return options
- Large arbitrary waste factors can create expensive leftovers
A percentage is a planning input, not a fact about every project. Record why it was added. “Heavy orange-peel texture observed” is actionable; “always add 20%” is not. For an unfamiliar substrate, ask the coating manufacturer or a qualified paint supplier which primer, spread rate, and application conditions apply.
Round the shopping list, not just the grand total
Suppose the raw calculation produces 1.86 gallons of blue wall paint, 0.76 gallon of flat white ceiling paint, and 0.42 gallon of semigloss trim paint. The sum is 3.04 gallons, but buying four gallons of one coating will not complete the job. With only gallon cans available, the practical list is two wall gallons, one ceiling gallon, and one trim gallon. If quarts are sold, the trim purchase could change after checking the label and package sizes.
Keep a record of the manufacturer, product line, base, color formula, sheen, lot information, and room. Store retained paint according to its label and local requirements. Leftover material can be helpful for touch-ups, but an old or improperly stored coating may not reproduce the original finish.
Safety and project limits
The quantity formula does not determine whether a coating is suitable, whether ventilation is adequate, or whether the surface can be disturbed safely. Read the product label and safety information for preparation, personal protection, ventilation, temperature, humidity, drying, and disposal requirements.
EPA guidance warns that renovation activities such as sanding, cutting, and window replacement can create hazardous lead dust in pre-1978 housing. Rules differ for paid work, rentals, child-occupied facilities, and owner-performed work. Review current EPA and applicable state requirements before disturbing an older coating. Quantity planning is not a lead assessment.

Questions about this estimate
How many square feet does one gallon of paint cover?
Sherwin-Williams gives about 350–400 square feet per gallon as a general planning figure, but actual coverage changes with the product, substrate, texture, color, application, and desired finish. Use the label and technical data for the exact coating as the final authority.
Do I multiply the wall area by the number of coats?
Yes. A 350-square-foot wall area receiving two full coats creates 700 coat-square-feet. Primer is calculated separately because it can have a different coverage rate and may be needed only on repairs or specific substrates.
Should I subtract every door and window?
Subtract large openings when accuracy matters, but do not create false precision. Small openings can be offset by paint retained in rollers and trays, irregular surfaces, and touch-ups. Keep doors and window trim as separate surfaces if they will be painted.
Why does the calculator round wall and ceiling paint separately?
Different products, sheens, or colors cannot usually be combined into one can. Rounding each purchase category separately produces a more realistic shopping list than rounding only the grand total.
Does one-coat paint guarantee one application?
No universal rule can guarantee that. Coverage and hide depend on the coating, approved colors, substrate, preparation, film thickness, and product instructions. Read the label and warranty terms for the exact product rather than relying on a generic calculator setting.
